It occurs within Cismontane woodland, Lower montane coniferous forest, Pinyon and juniper woodland, and Upper montane coniferous forest, growing at elevations from 715 to 1800 meters. Notes

California plants previously identified as Orthotrichum holzingeri are now placed in the genus Lewinskya. Similar to L. laevigata.
