It occurs within Lower montane coniferous forest, Pinyon and juniper woodland, Subalpine coniferous forest, and Upper montane coniferous forest, growing at elevations from 2100 to 2400 meters. Lewinskya spjutii is ranked 1B.3, Plants Rare, Threatened or Endangered in California and Elsewhere; Not very threatened in California.
